A strong new force of viticulturists and enologists are redefining America's "wine country." They've settled throughout the state of Michigan and are producing some world-class varietals that could fool the most avid French or Californian wine-lover. Michigan now ranks 13th in wine production by volume in the US. It's also the fourth largest producer of grapes for juice and non-alcoholic beverage processing in the nation. Sparkling wines, eau de vies (distilled wine which, unlike brandy, is not aged in oak), ports, and sherry, flank a large portfolio of still wines made in sweet, semi-dry, and dry styles.
