After devastating B.C. floods, business owners have new worry: Thieves

Tuesday, the family reported the suspected theft of the barrels. Previously used to age wine, the barrels were going to be used as decor during events since being contaminated by flood waters.

The city’s mayor, Henry Braun, was made aware of the alleged theft at a recent news conference.

“I have not heard of this,” he said. “There are some police barriers that have been stolen, which has been an issue … I will be heading back to the emergency operations centre to let police know this is happening.”

Abbotsford Const. Paul Walker said he’s aware of two reports of theft in the Sumas Prairie and one break-and-enter of a home in the flood area, which is being monitored by roving patrols.

More than a thousand kombucha bottles that were carried away during the storm have been spoiled by flood waters. Routley said they even found one of their shipping containers and keg fridges in their neighbour’s fields.
