Oregon Wine Spreads its Wings

What is beyond doubt is the fact that, while offers for the top Oregon wines are increasing, they are increasing mostly in the US market.

Domaine Serene's international offers account for 13.8 percent of its total, while Erath manages 6.85 percent.

Now the odd thing is that, five years ago, the total number of offers for the top 10 Oregon wines was smaller, but the percentage available overseas was larger. In 2017, the top 10 wines accounted for 4412 offers, collectively, with 406 from international retailers, or 9 percent of the total. Of this year's wines' 6690 offers, 498 are from international merchants, or 7.3 percent.

值得一提的是列表的构成。黑比诺has always been the dominant grape variety in Oregon – at least when it comes to offers – so it is noteworthy to see Pinot Gris double its representation to two wines for 2021.

And price raises an interesting prospect, too – the most-offered wines from Oregon are actually getting cheaper. In 2017, the average median price of the wines on the list across all markets was $32.12; this year it is $29.16, a fall of 9.2 percent. For offers on the US market only, the fall is slightly larger at 9.79 percent.

That downward trend won't necessarily worry most Oregon producers but, coupled with increased competition in an already crowded US market, it could be a sign that producers need to look beyond their front gate and out to the wider world.
